  PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

Dr. Öktem is a Senior Fellow at the Risk Management and Decision Process Center and has served as an Adjunct Professor at the Operations and Information Management Department of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in ‘Near-Miss Management’. Dr. Öktem’s work has focused on defining and addressing near-misses across industries, particularly in chemical, petrochemical and financials. Her research in both ‘personal’ and ‘process’ near-misses for the chemical industry has appeared in numerous journals and publications, including the Encyclopedia of Quantitative Risk Assessment and Analysis (John Wiley and Sons).

Dr. Oktem is also the Managing Partner of Near-Miss Management LLC, which provides unique and dynamic process risk management solutions. She currently oversees product development and operations.

Dr. Öktem’s interests and experience include Environmental Sustainability and Value Creation. She developed and taught courses in this field using innovative formats at both the Wharton School, Philadelphia, and Bahçesehir University, İstanbul.  Prior to joining Wharton, Dr. Öktem was an Adjunct Professor at the Drexel University, Engineering Management Department, where she taught “Engineering Management” and “Safety, Health and Environment for Engineers”. She also started a consulting firm providing Safety, Health and Environmental training services to Fortune 500 companies.

The economic advancement of underprivileged women in developing countries is one of the critical issues that interest Dr. Öktem.  She established the Sustainable Development platform for the Marmara Group Foundation in Istanbul. The prototype study, ‘Development of Women Entrepreneurs’, has been completed with a focus on improving self-employment opportunities for women.

Previously, Dr. Öktem was with Rohm and Haas Company, where she managed large-scale product development and manufacturing processes in agricultural chemicals. She also led corporate safety, health and environmental policy development, as well as corporate SH&E restructuring.

Dr. Öktem began her career as an Associate Director of the Chemical Division of The Marmara Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Research. There she established an environmental research group and worked with manufacturers and government authorities to set new standards.

Dr. Oktem holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering.
